Will a TENS machine help my 82-year-old fathers sciatica

Question
My 82-year-old father is suffering from sciatica and I have heard he may get some relief from a TENS machine. Is this the case and would it be safe at his age?

Answer
A TENS machine is an extremely safe method of pain control. It is perfectly reasonable to think of using this in a chronic condition like sciatica. It works by putting a small amount of electricity into the nerves to block the transmission of the pain signals. It won't interfere with any other treatments and it doesn't seem to cause any harmful effects. Consult your fathers GP prior to doing so just in case he is being treated for a condition you are unaware of. Best results I have found has been placing two pads on the lower back either side of the spine one pad on the hamstring where the pain is felt most and also place the remaining pad on the buttock where the pad is situated on the hamstring.

How long is it safe to use a TENS machine each day?

Question
I was wondering if you could tell me is it safe to use a TENS machine all day? My partner has rheumatoid arthritis in his spine, and was told by our doctor to buy one. Would you be able to tell me if there is a limit to the amount per day that you can use it? My partner is 38 years old, and otherwise fit and healthy.

Answer
There is no specific time limit for using a TENS machine. A TENS machine causes no harm and can be used as for as long as it is helpful.

Question I notice in previous posts that you mention people are usingTENS machines for Scoliosis. What is that? Does it really help your back that much. My Aunt has had back problems for a long time. She has Scoliosis and nothing is helping her. I thought if this machine works I could get her one.

Answer Yes, people with Scoliosis have found them quite useful. My sister suffers terrible pain from Scoliosis and she finds the Tens works really well for her. She lives on the Central Coast and she has a few friends with bad backs and they meet every month or so to discuss the ways of dealing with pain, and she has sold 3 machines to her friends, one has sciattica, the other degenerative discs and the other was in a car accident 20 years ago and she is now having all sorts of pain as a result of poor management of her problem all those years ago.
