Sciatica 21Most sciatica suffers get better within a few weeks and generally doesn't result in permanent damage. If your pain doesn't go away after a couple of weeks, go see your doctor.Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen etc, may be useful in reducing inflammation, however, if the sciatica is due to a herniated disk then studies seem to show that NSAIDs are no better than taking salt tablets. Get active, Once pain has been controlled, your doctor may recommend an exercise programme to strengthen your back. Exercise is important if you have a herniated disk. Prolonged bed rest isn't a good idea for sciatica and lower back pain - a couple of days at the beginning may be necessary, doctors believe that any longer will see muscles that support the spine start to weaken. Maintaining exercise has been shown to provide a beneficial effect on pain, the rate of recovery from low back pain, and function, compared with bed rest. Physiotherapy Your doctor may refer you to a physiotherapist for an exercise prescription to strengthen and stabilize your back, and also for help in relieving the pain of sciatica.Heat or ice packs – There does not seem to be any definitive evidence supporting the use of heat or ice packs in the treatment of sciatica. TENS Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. A 1999 study found that TENS was significantly more effective than sham treatments in decreasing pain scores in sciatica. The people I have sold machines to and have spoken to me at shopping centres and shows is that they have found the pain relief from TENS as remarkable. I had one lady who came to me at a shopping centre on the Gold Coast and she said she was in terrible pain, and she said to me "whats this machine you have". She said "I am a skeptic" the long and the short of it is she rented the machine for 4 days, she purchased a butterfly pad for $29.95 and guess what she came back next day and low and behold her rental machine was helping her, her husband gave me $50 holding deposit and came back 2 days later and she said that she had been wearing the machine non stop except for when she had a shower. She purchased the machine.I spoke with her again via telephone last Friday and it had been 3 three weeks since she purchased the machine and she was very pleased with her purchase. Just thought i'd pass this story on. Regards Peter Posted by Peter Thornton at 10:03 AM Help With...
