DRUG FREE PAIN RELIEF DURING LABOUR


The Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation TENS machine is a small battery operated unit to provide a non-invasive and drug free method of helping to control labour pain.

The TENS has been an effective technique for pain relief worldwide for the past 20 years with no side effects. With a TENS machine mild electrical impulses are transmitted through the skin via electrode pads.

The TENS is a hand held machine enables you to change the stimulation frequency from low to high. The low frequency should be used for resting periods in between contractions and the high frequency as soon as a contraction is felt. Evidence shows that to achieve the best results the TENS should be used from the onset of labour. In order to build up endorphins the body's natural pain relievers the TENS needs to be in place for at least 30 minutes before the full effectiveness can be felt.

When should I hire the TENS machine? It is a good idea to book your TENS machine in early pregnancy ante natal classes can assist you with our telephone number to avoid disappointment. It will then be dispatched in time for your 37th week. The machine is sent via Australia Post Express parcel delivery. You can use the TENS machine for back ache once you have reached 37 weeks in your pregnancy. Check with your doctor to ensure this is suitable for your situation. Please note that we are only able to hire these units within Australia and New Zealand.

Where do I position the pads on my back? Your partner or midwife can assist you with the placement of the electrodes, and once placed on your back you are now in control of your pain.

Upper Electrodes
Draw a horizontal line across the sharp angle at the base of the shoulder blades.
The top of the upper electrodes should be placed approximately three finger widths down from this.
Lower Electrodes
Place centre of the lower electrodes at the S3 level which is just below the dimple at the top of the buttocks. If you decide to Hire a TENS instructions will be sent to you with your delivery.
