Latest NewsScoliosisSome of this information comes from the Scoliosis Association of Australia. The information below is designed to help you and others in need of information on Scoliosis. If you don't know the website it is below. http://www.scoliosis.org.au/ Everyone's spine has natural curves. These curves round our shoulders and make our lower back curve slightly inward. But some people have spines that also curve from side to side. These curves can't be corrected simply by learning to stand up straight. This condition of side-to-side spinal curves is called scoliosis. On an x-ray, the spine of a person with scoliosis looks more like an S or a C than a straight line. Some of the bones in a scoliotic spine also may have rotated slightly, making the person's waist or shoulders appear uneven. One of the most common signs of scoliosis is a prominent shoulder blade, frequently the right one. One shoulder might also be higher, and the child seems to tilt to one side. One hip might seem higher than another. Eighty percent of cases have unknown causes, although it tends to run in families and affect more girls than boys. Source: National Scoliosis Foundation Many people we have spoken to at shows etc have asked can tens help with the pain and realignment. AS we are not health professionals we cannot give advice but what we will say is that we have many customers who use the ems tens on a daily basis and helps manage their pain. Dr. Winter, a spine expert, states that pain is very rarely a symptom of scoliosis in adolescents. Some adolescents do experience a muscular type of pain which occurs because the muscles on one side of the curve are working overtime trying to control the curve. When these muscles are overworked, they hurt. But with adults, the question is more complicated. Back pain is experienced by much of the population with no known cause. Often, back pain in adults is caused by natural disc decay or arthritis. It is therefore sometimes difficult to tell the difference between pain that is caused by scoliosis and pain that is not. Scoliotic pain in the adult is thought to be due to disc decay that is uneven and faster than normal. This occurs because of the scoliotic curve puts uneven weight on the spine. TENS is a treatment for pain which is accepted by the medical profession. TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. It is an electrical unit with 4 electrodes which are placed on the skin. The unit emits an electrical signal which stimulates your nerve cells through the skin. This stimulation prevents pain signals from the painful area from getting to the brain. Low frequence sends endorphins which is your natural body pain reliever.
